For me, floristry is a natural extension of other art forms I have studied throughout my life. I draw inspiration from anywhere I can, and watch unexpected memories, even ones from childhood, intertwine themselves into my flowers. I danced ballet from ages 4-20, and at the new year I started taking up classes again. After reuniting with the art of ballet, immediately all of the lessons it taught me were at the forefront of my mind again. Lessons in balance, form, and gracefulness.
Ballet is what inspired this entire group workshop, hosted alongside Harvest Floral Company and Lin Floral Co. Weaving these two creative outlets of mine together felt as natural as falling into a plié, even after a few years away. During each of the instruction portions of this 2-day floral workshop in Salt Lake City, my co-hosts and I mimicked the flow of ballet movements in our designs. During her installation class, Bree of Lin Floral Co gathered everyone to help with an arch that somehow channeled both the bursting and the soft flowing energy of spring. Meg of Harvest Floral Company led the bouquet making. And finally, I wrapped up with a large urn design class.
During my instruction, I reminisced on my own ballet days. I also thought of the lovely model Eme who joined us during the styled shoots for this Rite of Spring workshop. Eme donned her pointe shoes and echoed our floral work as she twirled around the room. It was all a delightful blur of gauzy pink and lilac purple. Even the shapes started to blend: A delicate branch arched upwards, as if a slender arm in fourth position. A ballerina leaping happily, as if a bloom reaching towards the new spring light.
